Sailing

Even though I have been racing little sailboats for almost 50 years, I feel like I am just getting going! See a quick history below. I am also a student of the rapidly changing sailing media landscape. Click here for my Sailing Links Page.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away…

In 1971 a friend of my dad’s sponsored me to be a junior member of Manila Yacht Club. After studying Royce’s Sailing Illustrated for a few Saturdays and taking a written test, we sailed out into Manila Bay in a fleet of plywood Penguins that had been built right there at the club.

Back in America

After six years of living landlocked in the inland empire, I came to Seattle and U of W. Charley McKee and Jack Christiansen let me practice against them and learn, and I ended up sailing a few college regattas while also picking up rides on 470s, 505s, and J24s. In the ‘80s and ‘90s we had a pretty serious J24 program going with John King, Jack Christiansen, Brian Thomas, and Chris Lanzinger and sailed in the ‘89 worlds in Kingston and ‘92 worlds in Annapolis finishing 12th and 8th respectively. (we were not so good at taking pictures back then)

The kids grew up so… Tasars

The girls were born in ‘97 and ‘99 and became my main focus. 15 years later they started doing their own thing so Lindsey and I got a Tasar and sailed in the 2013 worlds at Cascade Locks in the gorge. We called it the “Not Last World Tour” with a supreme focus on keeping the boat upright.

Lasers, and

Before COVID I got into the habit of driving to California with my laser on top and getting some sun and sailing a few regattas.

Aeros

Everyone in Seattle sails Aeros, and often we get more than 20 boats on the starting line. We hosted the worlds in the gorge in 2022. The boats are fun and demanding and the competition is steep.

Flying Crazy

If you catch me staring off into the distance, I am probably dreaming about wingfoiling. I started my journey to learn this crazy new sport in the fall of 2021 and am getting better and having a blast. I sold the Tasar the other little boats are feeling neglected.
